Private Investigation
What is a Private Investigator?
A
Private Investigator (often licensed by the state) is a person that can
be hired by individuals, attorneys, or insurance companies to undertake
investigations. Private Investigators often work for attorneys in civil
cases or criminal defense, or work for insurance companies to
investigate suspicious claims. Before the advent of no-fault divorce,
many private investigators were hired to search out evidence of
adultery or other illegal conduct within marriage to establish grounds
for a divorce. Despite the lack of legal necessity for such evidence in
many jurisdictions, collecting evidence of adultery or other "bad
behavior" by spouses and partners is still one of the most called for
services investigators undertake. Other domestic investigations include
child custody, alimony, marital property disputes, and attempting to
locate individuals who fail to pay child support.
Private
Investigators also engage in a large variety of work that is not
usually associated with the industry in the mind of the public. For
example, many Private Investigators are involved in process serving,
the personal delivery of summons, subpoenas and other legal documents
to parties in a legal case. The tracing of absconding debtors can also
form a large part of a Private Investigators workload. Many agencies
specialize in a particular field of expertise. For example, some
Private Investigation agencies only deal with skip tracing. Others may
specialize in Technical Surveillance Countermeasures (TSCM), or
Electronic Counter Measures (ECM), which is the locating and dealing
with unwanted forms of electronic surveillance (for example, a bugged
boardroom for industrial espionage purposes). Some Private
Investigation agencies may work as Corporate Investigators,
specializing in corporate matters. These matters include anti-fraud
work, the protection of intellectual property and trade secrets,
anti-piracy, copyright infringement investigations, due diligence
investigations and computer forensics work.
At
Shelton Investigations LLC, we use many means to determine the facts in
a variety of matters. To carry out investigations, we may use various
types of surveillance or searches. To verify facts, such as an
individual’s place of employment or income, our investigators may make
phone calls or visit a subject’s workplace. In other cases, especially
those involving missing persons and background checks, we often
interview people to gather as much information as possible about an
individual. In all cases, we assist attorneys, businesses, or the
public with a variety of legal, financial, or personal problems.
At
Shelton Investigations LLC, we offer many services, including
executive, corporate protection; pre-employment verification; and
individual background profiles. We may also provide assistance in civil
liability and personal injury cases, insurance claims and fraud, child
custody and protection cases, and premarital screening. We can also be
retained to investigate individuals to prove or disprove infidelity.
Most of our investigators are trained to perform physical surveillance
for as long as needed. We may also perform computer database searches,
or work with someone who does. Computers allow our investigators to
quickly obtain massive amounts of information on individuals’ prior
arrests, convictions, and civil legal judgments; telephone numbers;
motor vehicle registrations; association and club memberships; and
other matters.
